I got a lot of 113 Soundpoint 550 phones with version 4.0.xx on them. To upgrade the phones, I just logged into the web interface and hit the button and the phone would get the newer version in a matter of seconds. One of those phones was only running a 3.2.XX version and would not let me upgrade via the web interface. I decided to upgrade via tftp. This file: UC_Software_4_0_2B_release_sig_split.zip appears to be what I need, but why is it 362MB and its taking 6 hours to download. The phone only has 24MB of storage. Is this even the right file? Do I need to upgrade the Boot ROM as well?

The download is large because each model of SoundPoint IP phone requires its own build of the UC software, and that ZIP file contains all of the UC images for all of the SPIP models that this version of UC software supports.  There isn't just one universal binary of the UC software, and there are a lot of phone models that are still supported.

If you are moving from 3.x.x to 4.x, you will need to upgrade the BootROM, too.  Grab the 4.4.0 BootROM upgrader ZIP, and stuff the contents of that into the same directory on your provisioning server that houses the UC upgrade files.  The phone will do the right thing and upgrade the BootROM first before installing the version of UC that you have on your server.

Thanks! Also, will that bootrom work on a Soundpoint 501? 601? or do I need something a little older?

The 300/301, 430, 500/501 and 600/601 phones have long since been discontinued and end-of-lifed for software updates.  UC 4.x does not run on them at all.  Check the software update matrix for SoundPoint IP here: http://downloads.polycom.com/voice/voip/sip_sw_releases_matrix.html
