I have a polycom soundstation duo setup with an asterisk server (version 1.8.10.1). I can receive and make calls just fine to/from polycom devices attached to that server. Now, I was looking for a way to enable HD voice on the asterisk server. Polycom devices, I have, are HD voice enabled I suppose as HD voice logo in in-print on them.

While looking at how can one enable HD voice on the asterisk server, I found that I have to enter allow=g722 in sip.conf but I found following blocks in my sip.conf:

[my-codecs](!)
disallow=all
allow=ilbc
allow=g729
allow=gsm
allow=g723
allow=ulaw

and following one,

disallow=all ;need to disallow=all before we can use allow=
allow=ulaw ;Note; In user sections the order of codecs listed
;with allow= does NOT matter!
;allow=alaw
;allow=g723.1 ;Asterisk only supports g723.1 pass-thru!
;allow=g729 ;Pass-thru only unless g729 licence obtained

Questions:

- Are g729 and g723 completely different codecs?
- Should I use g722 for enabling HD voice or will g723, g723.1 and g729 will
do?
- Should I uncomment allow=g723.1 and allow=g729 in the second block to enable HD voice?
- Do I need to do any configuration on my polycom devices to enable HD voice?

Hello ,

welcome to the Polycom Community.

Regarding your question towards Asterisk codec settings I can only recommend to post the question in the Digium forum => here <=

G.729 needs a license on the Asterisk server and the Wiki for example => here <= is a great source for questions.

The Phone will need a HD compatible device answering the call or no HD Voice codec will be negotiated.

Please ensure to provide some feedback if this reply has helped you so other users can profit from your experience.

Questions:

- Are g729 and g723 completely different codecs?

Yes

- Should I use g722 for enabling HD voice or will g723, g723.1 and g729 will do?

 Yes: G.723, G.723.1, G.729 as well as G.711a/u are 'phone quality' codecs (3.5 Hz), G.722 is 'high quality' one (7 Hz)

- Should I uncomment allow=g723.1 and allow=g729 in the second block to enable HD voice?

No

- Do I need to do any configuration on my polycom devices to enable HD voice?

No, but as Steffen wrote, you need to call the device supporting G.722 codec too
