Who is Arnie the Doughnut?

Today over 200 students gathered for a Polycom Special Event based on the ASK format to interview Laurie Keller, author and illustrator of the Arnie the Doughnut books. The first Arnie the Doughnut was a picture book, but students kept asking Laurie for more adventures for Arnie (Arnie was a doughnut that didn’t understand he was to be eaten). The students read the new chapter books of Arnie’s adventures: Bowling Alley Bandit and Invasion of the UFOnuts. Ms. Keller’s wonderful sense of humor, and entertaining illustrations sparked the students’ imaginations and great questions.

Here are some of the questions posed:

• Why did you write a story about a doughnut?

• Are the characters named after your family members?

• Which do you like better – writing or illustrating?

• What do you do when you get stuck writing?

• Which book from your childhood would you give 5 sprinkles out of 5 (that’s Arnie’s rating scale)?
